The estuary is calm today
In the brightness of the morning
Seaweed shines like chalcedon
In the winter slanting sun
The day after the storm had left
A wash of debris on its sloping banks
A pearl glass bottle, crumpled can
That once held golden cider and so many grey
And leafless branches,
Discarded antlers made of ivory,
Snapped off and fallen yesterday
The estuary is calm today
The water rose and then went down again
The concrete banks are washed in green
Algae glowing peridot
A runner on the gull wing bridge
With ruby trainers on her feet
Taps out a rhythm then heads off along the airport road
There’s soaked and dried out paper here
Among the masks and curled up copper leaves
So sharply lit by winter sun
That shines from a low angle through
The chain link fence, across the gleaming mud, onto
One single mirror drop of morning dew
