Little puddles
Little puddles shining brightly
All along the path at dusk
Diamonds in the grit and mud
Holding water from the sky
Flocks of seagulls flying by
Among the clouds beneath the ground
In puddle-vision ... upside down
Alien birds
The first one that I ever saw was in the middle of a road
In England, looking battered and confused in Somerset.
It zig zagged, panicked, then it disappeared into a ditch
I saw one in the Connswater not so many years ago - it seemed to shiver as it stood
Staring knee deep in the stream - its fine white neck was like a question mark
Its sooty beak and jetty legs, its pure white feathers, surely not at home
Too beautiful to be among barbarians like us
Would it find enough to eat? Survive the cold?
Today around Victoria Park and dotted all along the estuary
Still other-worldly, strange,
And fishing
The answer to the question
Yes
